Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Drone) Technician

Blinn's Drone Technician Program is the only program of its type in the state, providing both technician and flight training.  As you earn your Associate of Applied Science in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, you learn the concepts required to become a professional in the field, including electronics, mechanical design, and programming, and obtain specialized knowledge in unmanned aircraft systems, including flight, design, policy, and mission planning.

Degree and Certificate Plans

This 60-credit-hour degree prepares students for careers as drone technicians and may transfer toward select bachelor’s degree programs. Students can start with the 21-credit-hour Level-1 Certificate to gain entry level experience while working on earning their AAS.

Program FAQ

The 21-credit-hour Level-1 Certificate in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems provides an introduction to aerospace engineering, computer programming, flight theory, and aerodynamics.

The 39-credit-hour Level-2 Certificate in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems builds upon the Level-1 certificate with instruction in electromechanical, digital, and vision systems; microcomputer control; and engineering technology.

The 60-credit-hour Associate of Applied Science in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems prepares you for a career as a drone technician and may transfer toward select bachelor’s degree programs.

All three awards can be completed on the Brenham and RELLIS campuses.

Professionals trained in the maintenance and operation of sUAS are employed across a wide range of fields. Students can choose electives in a field of interest, including aerial photography, air and rescue, agriculture and forestry, construction, facilities and structure inspection, firefighting, law enforcement and disaster response, military and defense, oil and gas, and transport and delivery.

CAPS is a co-admissions partnership between Blinn and the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV). Through CAPS, you can co-enroll at both institutions and earn your AAS in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems from Blinn and your Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in General Studies from UHV. Current Blinn students also can transfer their credits toward the BAAS from UHV. For more information, see our CAPS Program page.
